Bigger Snacks, Bigger Slacks

One evening, I was just walking around the park, thinking of the things that took place that day. But suddenly something struck me. I always used to admire fat little kids. They were so cute that anyone would admire them.  I saw one of those ‘fat little kids’, sitting on a bench. He was trying to push a big sandwich into his mouth in one go! Then I came to think about these kids. Are they all like this guy, pushing sandwiches into their mouths? If it was true, I should really stop admiring them.

Obesity is a big problem my friends. I know I love food and I have a special passion for them, but if I ever turn obese, I would surely go on a diet. I won’t even wait till I am obese. I will surely go on a diet if I notice that I am gaining weight.

What is obesity?

Obesity means having too much body fat.  A child is obese if their weight is more than 20% higher than the ideal weight for a boy or girl of their age and height.

There is nothing to admire about those fat kids. Obesity is nothing to admire of.  And if you are not aware of the problems that Obesity can cause, here is a list of diseases that it can cause:-

  1. Pre-diabetes and diabetes
  2. Heart disease, high blood pressure (hypertension)
  3. Hyperlipidemia (too much cholesterol in the blood, which can clog the arteries)
  4. Sleep apnea and breathing problems
  5. Bone conditions, such as hip problems
  6. Gastro-intestinal diseases
  7. Early puberty
  8. Psychological problems, like poor self-esteem and depression

This is not the end of the list. There are several others too (I have only mentioned a few, but important ones).

Many studies have shown that kids who spend more time watching television and playing video games are at higher risk of becoming overweight.  One in three high school youth do not engage in vigorous physical activity.

Kids in families with obese parents tend to be obese themselves.  If one parent is obese or overweight, their teen has an 80% chance of being overweight.  This is probably because of a combination of genetics and family behavior and habits.  Children of moms who have diabetes are more likely to be overweight.

There are no medicines for obesity. All you can do is go on a heavy diet. This cannot be done overnight. Remember, ‘Rome was not built in a day’. Changing the behavior is the best approach towards obesity. Also remember that ‘Prevention is better than cure’. Don’t let yourself be obese. Control the food, do some exercise and try to stay fit. You should follow healthy habits. Obesity is nothing to be proud of.

If you want to reduce weight, here are some tips for you. First of all, get out of the McD. Change your daily meal. Your plate should be divided into four sections:-Fruits, grains, vegetables and proteins. And there should be a cup placed besides your plate, which contains some kind of dairy products.

This does not mean, you should turn a vegetarian. I am a non-veg and as I told you earlier I have a special passion for food. You can eat all those oily fast food you love once in a while, but not always. You should not be controlled by those foods. If you can do this, you can easily say “I’m Lovin’ it”

Encourage physical activity. Get out to the grounds atleast for one hour, daily. Go discover the world, beyond Facebook and YouTube. Don’t sit on your sofas and watch Television the whole day. Don’t be couch potatoes. Come on! You can be more than that.

Since 1980, childhood obesity has TRIPLED. If the current trend continues, more than 86% of adults in the United States will be overweight or obese by the year 2030.

Here are some other facts about Obesity:-

  • 1 in 3 American children is overweight or obese.
  • 1 in 5 infants drink Soda (Soda can easily make you obese).
  • 50% of overweight children remain as overweight adults.
  • The average teen eats fast food twice a week.
  • 2/3 of high schoolers drank either soda, sports drinks or other sugar sweetened beverages one or more times per day.
  • 1 in 4 children does not participate in any free time physical activity.
  • Children spend an average of 7.5 hours a day using entertainment media.

So, obesity is the root of many diseases. You should be able to recognize the problems of obesity. You should take the necessary steps to avoid obesity for you and your children. And try to be a role model for others.

Stay Healthy!
